Kery Strysick’s Major Project Description:
The Gifted Math and Science Class Website

Introduction:

For my major project, I created a web site of resources for gifted students and their parents at Franklin Middle School in Champaign, Illinois. The web site contains a summary of current topics being studied in class, daily homework assignments, long-term projects, project guidelines, and family challenge problems. This website is designed to increase communication between parents, teachers, and students.  As access to technology increases it is important that educators utilize technology to increase communication between parents, teachers, and students.  Eventually I would like to involve students more by posting their projects and work.

Project Background:

I have been the gifted math and science teacher at Franklin Middle School for two years.  Prior to this I taught 8th grade math and science for two years.  Over my years of teaching I have noticed that as students enter middle school they become less communicative with their parents.  Students are less likely to talk to their parents about what they are doing in school.  I have also noticed that despite this decreased communication from the children many parents are still interested in what is going on at school.

Project Goals:

1. Students and their parents will be able to quickly and easily access important class information.

2. Parents will have an increased awareness of their student’s day to day learning and in turn increased involvement in their student’s education.
