This
project will be repeated during the 2001-2002 school year.
Purpose
Through
this project children will learn to perform a variety of computer tasks
in the areas of desktop publishing and web page development. Participants
will express their unique views on friendship and conflict resolution.
This project will be meaningful to people of all ages and cultures while
promoting an awareness of the need to get along with others.
Subjects
This
project incorporates technology, arts, community interest, language, history
and social studies.
Grade
Level
This
project is appropriate for students in all grades and can be modified to
accommodate various academic levels. Homeschoolers are welcome!
Summary
Students
from around the world in classrooms, public and private schools, and
homeschools will create a collaborative multimedia web book project.
Participants will send a home page containing a collection of pictures
and words that give advice on how to get along with others. Submissions
will be added as chapters.

Project Outline and Procedures:
Participants:
1.
Through literature, web sites, and/or discussion children will generate
their thoughts about friends and getting along with others, for example:
how to make friends, how to keep friends, how to make up with a friend
after a disagreement, what to do when their friend or someone else
isn't nice to them, and so on.
2.
Students will design a postcard that includes a picture and words
of advice on how to get along with others. The postcard may be designed
with any computer program that can be saved as a web page. Images
used may be computer graphics or student drawings that have been scanned.
Image type and format is left up to the participant.
3. One web page will be created containing the class collection
of postcards. At the bottom of each postcard please include the following:
First Line - student's words of advice
Second Line - student's
first name, age, city & state or province, country.
A sample
page has been created to help clarify this.
4.
Please do not send any photographs of individual students or the class.
5.
Send the Internet address for the home page that is created in a class
or school to kschlappi@pekin.net along with a brief description of
the group and their surroundings. The Email subject heading should
be "Friends Chapter".
Project
Coordinator:
1.
Will create a web book that includes chapters submitted by all participants.
Each chapter will include a brief introduction about the class or
school. The school name and address will be posted. If the school
has a web site a link to that site will be included.
2.
Will keep all participants informed and provide project updates.
3.
Will provide technical assistance.
4.
Will provide a list of resources.
