Project Abstract:

This web-based project was developed as part of CTER; a master's program in curriculum and technology.  The intention of this project is to provide technology unit plans to use with gifted elementary students.  It will include links to application tutorials for the teacher and the student as well as links to other pertinent sites (such as computer  enrichment activities).  Over time, this site will include a  database of lesson plans and units designed to teach technology skills to gifted students. It will have an interactive function that allows teachers to make comments on the information presented in order to provide feedback on the information provided, to make additional suggestions and to discuss solutions to potential problems.

Project Objectives:
  1. Provide 15-18 hour unit plans that teach introductory technology application courses.
  2. Provide application tutorials to be used as teacher and student resources.
  3. Create an interactive environment to encourage the submission of additional lesson plans, feedback on how to improve this site, and experience based suggestions on how to improve the lesson plans.
  4. Continue to develop this site as new technology develops.

Purpose:

As a teacher for GERI (Gifted Education Resources Institute), I noticed that I could not find unit plans to teach various technology courses.  The purpose of this website was to compile these unit plans for future teachers as well as provide suggestions for other teachers who may wish to teach a similar course.  In addition, I wanted to create a site that housed other relevant materials to encourage enrichment and to provide support to those teachers.

Types of learners:

I teach gifted children from 1st to 5th grade during Saturday and summer courses.  These children are not only gifted, they also are highly motivated to learn because they have chosen this class. Therefore, I have designed these plans for 2-3 grade levels above the norm. You may wish to adjust plans as necessary.

Access to learners:

I teach in the Super Saturday and Super Summer programs through the GERI program at Purdue University.

Evaluation of Effectiveness:

This website will be effective if my students or other teachers will utilize it as a resource.  Its effectiveness will be furthered if other teachers contribute to the lesson plans or share comments to improve the site.

Issues Raised:

How many teachers can devote 15-18 hours of instruction purely to teaching technology skills?  If teachers cannot devote this time to teaching the applications, how will the students be expected to master the techniques? How many teachers have access to the necessary hardware and software?  Are these teachers proficient in the use of technology?

Future Possibilities:

This site could be broadened to include units that teach many more beginning technology skills. It could also include lesson plans and/or units that focus on more advanced technology skills.  This site will be updated as more tutorials and teacher technology resources become available.
