Introduction

Welcome to the Cell Corporation Webquest! This webquest was created in part for a graduate course in Curiculum, Technology, and Education Reform through the University of Illinois @ Urbana-Champaign. If you have any questions or encounter any "bugs" please contact Robb Beane.



Target Learners

This WebQuest was designed for use in a high school Biology course. I will be using it with my 10th Grade Biology students. With some modification the difficulty level could be reaised or lowered to accomodate other grade levels.


Iowa Teaching Standards

Standard 2 Demonstrates competence in content knowledge appropriate to the teaching position.

Model Criteria

The teacher:

a. Understands and uses key concepts, underlying themes, relationships, and different perspectives related to the content area.

b. Uses knowledge of student development to make learning experiences in the content area meaningful and accessible for every student.

c. Relates ideas and information within and across content areas.

d. Understands and uses instructional strategies that are appropriate to the content area.

Standard 3 Demonstrates competence in planning and preparing for instruction.

Model Criteria

The teacher:

c. Uses student’s developmental needs, backgrounds, and interests in planning for instruction.

d. Selects strategies to engage all students in learning.

e. Uses available resources, including technologies, in the development and sequencing of instruction.

Standard 4 Uses strategies to deliver instruction that meets the multiple learning needs of students.

The teacher:

a. Aligns classroom instruction with local standards and district curriculum.

b. Uses research-based instructional strategies that address the full range of cognitive levels.

c. Demonstrates flexibility and responsiveness in adjusting instruction to meet student needs.

d. Engages students in varied experiences that meet diverse needs and promote social, emotional, and academic growth.

e. Connects students’ prior knowledge, life experiences, and interests in the instructional process.

f. Uses available resources, including technologies, in the delivery of instruction.

Standard 5 Uses a variety of methods to monitor student learning.

Model Criteria

The teacher:

a. Aligns classroom assessment with instruction.

b. Communicates assessment criteria and standards to all students and parents.


Process

For this WebQuest to be successful the teacher/facilitator should have a good knowledge of the web and MS Word. The students are usually quite adept at the use of both areas, but some may need some guidance.

To get started you will need to make several (enough for each of your students) slips of paper with the various organelles on them (one to a slip). They will be coming to you to find out what role they will be playing in Cell Corportation. Once they have drawn their "job" they can procede with the task at hand, learning about cell organelles.

Currently the quiz is set up for use by my classes only through survey monkey. Although anyone can take the quiz, only I will be able to see the results. To remedy this situation you can do one of two things: sign up for Survey Monkey and write your own quiz (feel free to use my questions), or to print the questions listed below and use a paper quiz. I am currently working on my end to remedy this situation so that all classes can attempt the quiz and get their own results that can be printed and handed in to their teacher.
