The textbook that I choose was a 4th grade Social Studies book.
The book was called For the People, By the People. The textbook was
mostly on the beginning of the United States. One problem with this
book was that it was mainly the History of white America like many textbooks
on the topic. Although this is an important prospective of U.S. History
it is not the only face of the History of our country. The first
part explained the colonies of the U.S. I would probably condense
this unit together to make time to explain Asian, African, Native and Mexican
contributions and lives at this time in history. It is important
to understand these faces of history as well.
The second Unit was the Revolutionary War. I feel that it
is important to add people of different cultures role during the revolutionary
war. I think that before the Revolutionary War is explained I would
add a unit of Native American’s and their treatment from the colonist at
this time.
It is also important to teach children about Slavery and lives
of slaves in the History of the United States. There are many books
in literature that can enhance this topic and give the children a sense
of the inequalities of different races. I hope to connect understanding
raci8sm in the past to racism today to allow students to learn to make
their own judgments of people.
