The Color Exchange – Preschool and Kindergarten

Check out my website by clicking the above link.

The objective of the color exchange is to see how print varies across different countries.

The project consists of two parts:

Part I – The students draw a simple picture using the 8 basic colors.  These colors should include red, orange, yellow, green, blue, brown, purple and black.  The teacher should identify the colors in their native language on the student’s drawing.  When everyone has returned the pictures we will display this on the web site.  Teachers then can print out the pictures from the web site to hang in their classroom.  This is an easy way to incorporate multi-cultural experiences through the use of colors in an early childhood classroom.

Part II – With a maximum of 9 other countries I would like to do a crayon exchange.  To participate in the crayon exchange the teacher of the early childhood classroom needs to send me 9 boxes of crayons from their country to me in the United States.  After I have received everyone’s crayons then I will ship back a total of 9 boxes of crayons to each of the different participants.   The crayons can be used in the writing center so children can be exposed to different languages.

Materials:  electronic publishing, email, crayons, paper and postal mail

Procedure Followed:  The students draw a picture using the 8 basic colors.  Then the teacher labels the colors in their native language.  The teacher then scans the picture and emails the picture to the project coordinator.  As the project coordinator I will compile the pictures onto a “The Color Exchange” website. Teachers can access the website to find out the names of the colors in other languages and print out the pictures.  After we have a total of 9 other schools we will exchange the boxes of crayons.  The teachers will mail the project coordinator 9 boxes of the crayons.

Expected Outcome:  At the end of this project there will be a multi-cultural website with the names of colors from all over the world.  Also teachers from all over the world will have crayons from varies countries with the colors in their native language on them.  This part of the class will take longer then the actual course them I am enrolled in.

Actual Outcome:  I really like the website that I made.  My first problem with this project was trying to make this useful for younger children.  Since I teach preschool it is sometimes harder for them to comprehend people from other countries.  Now as a class we can post the pictures around our room and talk about the other countries and how their writing looks.  I used to Global SchoolNet Internet Registry to get people to join my project.  I did not get a lot of people to join yet, so with the help of some of my summer school students and their parents we created the website.
