Overview
Netscape Composer is HTML editing software available with the Netscape Navigator versions 4.x or 7.x. The composer feature is not available with some versions of Netscape Navigator. However, you can download versions 4.x or 7.x and get started with your web page very easily. To begin this activity, I decided to create a web page that I could use as a classroom/parent resource. Through this process, I was happy to find that using Netscape Composer was very similar to NVU. For an inexperienced user, both NVU and Netscape Composer present the basic word processing appeal. It is very easy to learn to use the different features that Netscape Composer presents.

I have not had much experience in creating web pages and enjoyed researching the different free authoring tools available. I downloaded a couple different editors (alleycode and web wizard)  before Netscape Composer and found that they were difficult to manage and took more than beginner's skill. With Netscape Composer you can create visually appealing and useful web pages with formatted text, tables and graphics.  It is a very good program for beginners and those who want to create web pages quickly. It is very easy to create links. You can also create multi-page projects that link to your main page.  This WYSIWYG editing tool allows users to display downloaded page backgrounds (in addition to solid colors). It also allows users to choose page colors for normal text, link text, active link text and visited link text. Users may insert images and link these images, if desired. Users may also link to an email address. Netscape Composer has a spell check feature, as well.
Please visit this web page to get a more detailed overview of the features of Netscape Composer. Below  are examples of the features I find useful.

You can change the background color in each cell.

Here is a table without the border showing.
It is helpful to insert a table to ensure formatting. When you upload your document, the text is sometimes slightly altered. Using a table helps this!

Pros and Cons
As mentioned before, Netscape Composer is a free html editor and that is definitely a plus. It seems to be somewhat difficult to create a professional looking web page using this program. It does not come with any special templates to make the page look clean cut. For an inexperienced user, it could be easy to make the page look overwhelming or jumbled because of a lack of format.  On the other hand, I think this tool is good for beginners because it is very simple to use. It is important that users have a sense for organizing information in a useful and simple way that appeals to his/her audience.

I created a classroom web page with Netscape Composer to become more familiar with its features. Please visit my page. Many of the links go to pages that are not fully developed. I attempted to present many of the features in this page to illustrate the extent of Netscape Composer's capabilities. I hope you enjoy this site and can find use for this html editing tool!
