Talking Outline
- My introduction
- Second grade teacher
- North Clay Elementary in Louisville, IL
- Small class of 15 students
- Currently third year teaching
- One year first grade
- One and ½ years in second grade
- Personality and Discipline Techniques
- My values are clustered in the Rules and Consequences philosophy
- Second place = Relationship-Listening philosophy
- Not surprised to fall in this category
- Identified with the example of Mrs. Control
- Also related to Mrs. Waffle from past experiences
- Student teaching and first year of teaching
- Falling in the middle of Rules and Consequences and Relationship-Listening
- It
is important to have established rules and consequences but students
should have a part in determining both – students need to take
ownership
- Students should have control of their
classroom situations and learning to make them responsible for the
future – They should understand why they need to learn and what sort of
behavior will make this learning possible
- Students should recognize mistakes or misbehaviors and with the help of the teacher, set goals to minimize these behaviors
- Learning
appropriate behavior and respect for one another in the classroom helps
children to see what kind of behavior they should have throughout life
– If a conflict arises between two children, both sides of the problem need to be talked out and dealt with
- Levels of teacher maturity and discipline models
- Late Intuitive-Survival teacher to early Reflective-Confident teacher
- I have always felt that the most important aspect of classroom management is fairness
- Students do not trust a teacher who is not fair
- No favorites/treating everyone as an equal classroom citizen
- Maximizing instruction time for the primary grades
- Establishing routine and expectations early
- Verbalizing/making known exactly what is expected and consequences if necessary
- Student teaching/first year
- Uncomfortable with disciplining students
- Wanted all to like me and school
- Quickly learned what it takes to establish classroom management
- Currently
- Feel established in my classroom management
- Students know what is expected and know what the rules are and why we have them (because they helped make them)
- Are respectful to others in mostly all situations
- Have learned ways to maximize instruction time
- Summary
- Enjoyed taking the inventory
- Know a little more about myself as an educator and my style of classroom management
- Understanding co-workers and myself
- Reflection for the future
