Why I Use It... What HTML Editing Software will NOT do for you!

This site, has been developed using Dreamweaver (HTML editing) and Fireworks (image editing). The capabilities of combining the two programs offers a powerful combination of tools. I do recommend the Dreamweaver tool set for several reasons, those are:

  • it is broadly accepted and supported
  • 3rd-party applications, add-ons and external tool-sets are widely available
  • it is well documented (go to a book store and you'll spend more time deciding on which resource to use rather than trying to find a resource)
  • training is available
  • many school districts have adopted it on a site license basis

In addition to the HTML (Dreamweaver) and image (Fireworks) editing software, other products are bundled with the Studio 8 package: Flash (animations), Flash Paper, and Contribute (Collaboration Utility)

Cost

This is the biggest hurdle. The package described above is expensive ($999). However, the package is available through UIUC for $99 (Amazing Price).

Usability

The second COST that most do not factor in a purchase decision is the time and effort required to become functional in the package. You can create a functional web page in Dreamweaver out of the box--it IS SIMPLE. However, to fully utilize the power that comes with the package--plan on spending (HOURS) to become proficient on each facet of the program.

Regardless of the editing application that you choose, there are several constants to consider. Editing applications, development suites or imaging applications will not:

  • make you a better programmer (maybe more efficient, but not better)
  • turn you into a web/interface designer
  • automatically make you proficient in the use of the tools.
  • provide you with all the tools you need (there are always limits to what the application can do compared to what you want to do!)
  • Often, a simple text editor (such as notepad) is a preferred option.
