Cost of Living

Objective:  For students to learn about slope, rate of change and direct variation using the cost of living comparison from people in different states.

Outline:

  1. Students will keep a detailed account of their expenditures for one week; keeping track of personal* and household expenses**.
  2. Students will total their personal expenses and household expenses.
  3. Using the totals, students make a table of cumulative expenses for each week.
  4. Students will then graph their results.
  5. Students must then recalculate their totals as best they can using the prices given from another state.  Students will use the Map page to get prices from a state in which they would like to compare.
  6. Students will then make a table of these new values and graph them with the original graph.

Teachers:  Use the Survey page, and complete a list of prices for your state if not already done and email me the results.

* Personal expenses:  These are defined as anything that the student buys himself, whether it is his/her money or their parent's money. (EX: Candy bar, soda, lunch, movie ticket, gas for his/her car . . .)

*Household expenses: There are defined as money spent for the entire family. (EX: Groceries, newspaper, electricity bill, gas bill . . .)
