Kindness Counts
A collaborative effort to encourage more kindness in the world

Project:  Kindness Counts - a collaborative effort to encourage more kindness in the world

Dates:  August 5, 2001 - June 20, 2002

Purpose:  To encourage students to do "random acts of kindness" for those around them and to  observe acts of kindness being performed in the world

Subject Areas:  Language arts, character development

Grade Levels:  All grade levels are welcome

Project Summary:
Everyday, we hear about terribly violent acts happening all over the world.  Through this project, students will focus on the random acts of kindness that happen each day but are often overlooked.  Students will submit accounts of random acts of kindness that they observed that day.  It could be an act of kindness performed by that student or by someone else.  The student could be the recipient of the act of kindness or simply an observer.

In addition to submitting accounts of kindness in the world, students will also write a story displaying how acts of kindness can help change the world.  Not only will this develop their writing skills, but it will also encourage the students to find ways to help others in this world.  Students will also be asked how their views of kindness have changed throughout the project:  Are they more aware of kindness?  Do they find themselves performing more random acts of kindness?  By the end of the project, students will be more aware of performing acts of kindness for others, will be more appreciative when acts of kindness are done for them, and will have developed their writing skills.

In order to participate, students need only submit accounts of acts of kindness they have seen and write a story that includes acts of kindness being performed.  All accounts and stories are due by July 25, 2001.  Upon receipt of the assignments, students will be contacted (via email) and asked how their awareness of acts of kindness has changed due to this project.
