At a restaurant I saw three older people going to a table. An older man
was carrying a cane for a lady who was holding on to her husband - he was
in a walker. I was enjoying my dinner and talking with my husband.
I felt warmed by the actions of the man who obviously enjoyed being with
this couple.

I saw this on the Today show this morning and I was very moved by it.
The focus was how important it is to know how to perform CPR. The
preface to the story was a compilation of stories about lives that
had been saved because someone used CPR. A couple of the stories
involved children who performed the life saving act on another child.
I was so moved by their acts of heroism, but like all heroes, they
felt they simply did what they had to do. I never cease to be impressed
at what kids can do and how cool they can remain in a crisis situation.
Children are alive today because of what these kids did.

In my summer school class someone dropped their crayon box. I helped
him clean it up. I felt good after I helped pick up the spilled crayons.

The act of kindness I saw was my sister's boyfriend emptying the
trash for me. I hate empty the trash but it is my job. Before he
dumped the trash I felt like I didn't want to empty it. After he
emptied the trash I felt relieved I didn't have to dump it. I also felt
good that he would do that for me.

One evening after a softball game, one of the girls' parents brought me
a plate of lasagna and bread so that I wouldn't have to cook for myself.
This made me feel appreciated in the community.

My random act of kindness is one that I did . One day I was at a
skating competition and I saw my old friend Victoria and it turned
out that we were competing against each other. We had skated and were waiting
for the results. When they were up we found out Victoria didn't place.
She took it very hard and I knew how it felt so I tried to calm her
down I told her I went through it too. It was easy for me to relate
to her and of course the next time she did great. That was
my act of kindness.

I was trudging through the pre-spring break blahs when I received a phone
call from a former student's parent. This was a surprise because
it had been two years since I taught this student and never spoke with
his Father before. This parent had said that he remembered how much
his son enjoyed my class and all of the hands on investigations we did
in science. He then went on to explain that he was an engineering
professor at the U of I and would I be interested in working with him on
a grant from the National Science Foundation. Of course I was flattered
and was very excited about the prospect of receiving a grant that would
help my classes. We worked on
the grant proposal together
and just this past week I found out that I had received a 10,000 dollar
grant. I consider this to be an act of kindness on the part of Armand
Beaudoin because it was totally unexpected. It is great to think
that we as teachers, whether we know it or not at the time, that we do
have great impacts on the students and their families. Armand has
said that he really wanted to help out a teacher and he picked me for this
project. Because of Armand's act of kindness it as revitalized my
enthusiasm for teaching. His act of kindness has had a great impact
on me and all of my future students. I hope to directly pass this
on to all of my
students this upcoming school
year by enriching their education with help from Armand and the grant from
the NSF.

Natalie babysits me when my mom and dad go to work. We were watching TV
when we saw the preview for a movie called Cats and Dogs. Natalie hadn't
seen it yet and I hadn't either. So, we thought we could go and see it
together since it was hot
and muggy outside. We called my mom at work and asked her if we could go.
She said we could but she had to see what time it was and where it was
playing. We waited then my mom called back and told us that the movie was
at 2:10. So, we went and we had a good time and the movie was great!
Natalie didn't have to take me but she was very nice to take me to the
movie!

My act of kindness is, I was at Dairy Queen and I was getting
something and my friend Katie was behind me and when I was ordering there
was an old man with a walker that was trying to get out the door so she
went over there and held it for him.

I was taking a class a couple of weeks ago where participants were coming
from cities all around to my city. The first morning, a young teacher
came in and said she was going through a toll booth that morning and when
she went to pay the toll, the attendant told her the car in front of her
had paid her toll for her. She was so excited as she shared this
with us that it really made us all feel good. Too often we concentrate
on the rude people of the world. I know I thought that it was such
a nice thing to do that I would try it the next time I hit the tollway.
The next day the young teacher came in and said she paid a toll for another
driver and it made her feel so good, she was going to do it from now on.
Two others at our table had also traveled on the tollway and paid tolls
for the cars behind them. This seems to be a classic example of how
random acts of kindness keep going farther than the originator ever considered.
Try it, it's really fun!!

My act of kindness is one I did myself. I was at a summer camp and
it was the first day. They had a place were you could buy candy. None of
of my friends had money but my mom had given me money. I went and I bought
candy for all of my friends. I didn't have enough money for candy for myself
but I felt good about buying candy for my friends.

On Thursday I picked up trash at the pool before swim team. Isn't that
great! My brother Tommy accidentally tripped his friend Gabriella and then
picked her up. Wasn't that nice!

One day I was at the Grocery Store and a old woman was carrying her groceries
and she dropped them. A woman came picked up her groceries and took
them to the old woman's car. The younger woman helped the older woman put
her walker in the back seat and helped the old woman into the car.

My truck needed repairs and would be in the shop for a couple of days,
or so I thought. The two days dragged out to over five days!
During that time, my neighbor was kind enough to lend me one of her cars,
a Mustang convertible. I was very appreciative of my neighbor, she
didn't have to lend me her car, but she wanted to help me out.

My dad went to Nashville, Tennessee, last week, and he went to a restaurant.
He got some food, ate it, then reached in his pocket for his wallet.
He realized then that he didn't have his wallet! The waitress came
over and asked if something was wrong. My dad said, "Yeah, sort-of."
She said, "Well, you can tell me." My dad said, "I forgot my
wallet. I only have $3.00." The waitress said, "That's okay.
I'll pay the rest of the bill for you." She paid the remainder of
the bill. My dad (obviously) thanked her.
My dad then went back to his hotel twenty miles away. He got a tip
of $20 and took it back twenty miles to the restaurant. He gave the
waitress the tip. He drove all that way just to give her a tip and
thank her for her act of kindness!
Hello
from Mrs. Haley's sixth grade class in Tipton, Iowa.
Mrs. Haley saw an idea and is using it this year in our class. We
have a bulletin board that says:
"Let's Sew a quilt of
Kindness this year". At the beginning of the year there were no squares
on the bulletin board. We are trying to fill up the whole board with squares
that tell about kind acts we have done as a class. So far, November
l2, we have 8 squares.
Squares l and 2
Mrs. Haley's Mom goes
to kidney dialysis 3 days a week. We have committed to making seasonal
decorations to help cheer up the dialysis unit. Squares one and two
are for leaves we made to hang in September, and turkey puppets that we
just made and sent.
Square 3 We participated in Coats for Kids and collected winter coats for
needy children.
Square 4 We participated in www.sightnight.org and collected 97 pairs
of prescription glasses for needy kids and adults in other countries.
Square 5 We answered President's Bush's plea for all American children
to send $l to him for Afghan children. We held a big bake sale to
raise the money.
Square 6 We made posters of peace to be airdropped to Afghan children
www.art-for-peace.org
Square 7 We all brought pennies to donate to the Red Cross relief for Washington
D.C. and New York.
Square 8 We are making friendship bracelets for a class of children
in 4 different states.
More to follow...Mrs. Haley's
