I use rubrics way too much! What other types of measurements can be used in place of rubrics? Pre-assessments, checklists, rating scales, relections, peer feedback, and portfolios can be used in addition to rubrics.
The rubrics I use are boring, lack detail, leave too much uncovered territory, and leave too much room for misinterpretation. How can I create more effective rubrics? Establishing clear performance criterion, providing descriptions of different performance levels, and outlining the scoring assigned to each task can help students to better understand what is being assessed. These improvements help me to get a more valid and reliable measurement of their understanding especially in a performance based course.
I use a variety of formal and informal methods of assessments, but not for measurement. Is it okay to replace paper-and-pencil tests, with performance-based assessments like projects, portfolios, and reflections? Using a variety of methods to assess students compliments a wide array of student learning styles and needs as well as the learning objectives.
Students need to be a part of the assessment process, not by just taking tests. How can I get my students more involved in using assessment results?  Self-evaluations, reflections, peer feedback, interest inventories, and Q&A sessions help get the students involved and promote them to become accountable for their learning.
