SHARING REGIONAL INFORMATION
IN THE UNITED STATES

Project Description:  Classroom teachers will join this project by sharing information that their class submits about their town within a specific region in our country.  With the class the teacher will discuss what kind of features make up their area and set it apart from other places.  The discussion should include but not be limited to the environment, history, and cultural richness of the area.
Project Activity 1:  Classroom teachers would need to teach a lesson on the history and environment of the area in which they live.  This could be done in several ways that best
suits the needs of the individual teacher and classroom.  If possible, I would suggest allowing students to do research on the Net to obtain information about their own town history.
If the Net is not available, try to work with your librarian at school or the public library. Many towns also have historical societies which are great sources of information.  After teachers faciliate a discussion on what information is relevant they may want to assign students to record and submit the information.  Your information maybe  submitted in paragraph form or you may select to submitted it like a chart or graphic organizer.  Include information like resources, landmarks, climate, landforms, history and heritage. Please include your
school's URL and your town's URL if available.

Project Activity 2: Teachers will have their students share their favorite place to visit in their area.  Students should select a site where they have taken a field trip, describe
it, and tell us why it's a great place to visit.  Share information that other students would like to hear about.  You may submit your information by email in an essay or poetry forms. Does your favorite place have their own web page?
Please include the URL so we can link that to our page.

Submission:  email your responses to kjhickey@uiuc.edu
Additional Optional Activities:  Is there any regional art, music, or cooking that you want to share? If so please include that too.
