Behavior Management Plan

Each Monday morning students are given $1000.00 in behavior bucks.  Behavior bucks can be used for a variety of things.  For example they can be used to get a drink of water, use the bathroom, or go back to your homeroom class for supplies which you forgot to bring with you, or borrowing school supplies from the teacher.   Students are also charged behavior bucks for not having their assignment notebook signed by a parent daily or for not fully completing it at the end of the day.  The positive feature of Behavior bucks is that they can be cashed in at the end of the quarter for special teacher rewards which includes a drawing of fun merchandise.   Student may also purchase special passes at the end of the quarter providing they have saved their money.

Classroom Rules:

  1. Respect each other’s space and property
  2. Follow directions the first time given
  3. Raise your hand and wait to be recognized before speaking
  4. Keep our learning environment safe and healthy
  5. Be productive. Utilize time wisely. Add to class discussions in a positive manner.

Consequences:

  1. Verbal Warning
  2. Written Consequence
  3. Written Consequence signed by parent
  4. Phone Call Home
  5. Referral to the Principal or Assistant Principals office

Step System:

Students may only receive 4 steps in a classroom per quarter without being referred to the principal’s office.  If two steps are given in the same day students may also be sent to the office.  The steps are defined under the consequence section.

**Exception: There are extreme cases where behavior will not warrant the step program, and these cases will immediately be referred to administration.  I.E. forgery, intimidation, vandalism, stealing, fighting.

Homework:

Homework will generally be assigned Monday through Thursday in my classroom.  I usually do not assign homework on Friday, as I expect students to work hard during the week and enjoy their family time together on the weekend.  There will be occasions where homework will be due on Monday, but it will be more the exception than the rule.  Homework is expected to be completed by the student and not by the parent.  This means that only homework done in your child’s handwriting will be acceptable.  You can help your child by pointing out areas where corrections need to be made and discuss them with your child.

Parents should make sure they set aside a specified time for their children to do homework.  Give them the praise and encouragement that they need to do a good job along with a quiet atmosphere.   Provide your child with the necessary tools to make homework time run smoothly.  Have on hand the following supplies to make homework tools available.

Pencils

Markers

Colored Pencils

Erasers

Dictionary

Thesaurus

Notebook paper

Tape

Glue

Scissors

Stapler

Pencil sharpener

Late Assignments

Responsibility is really stressed in our classroom.  It is important that your child learn to be responsible as they enter fourth grade.   If your child forgets or does not complete an assignment, he or she will receive a late stamp in their assignment notebook.   It MUST be signed and returned by the next school day.  If a student does not return the signed late slip the following day, he or she will be charged behavior bucks and loose additional points on the assignment if it is not returned.  Many parents like this policy because it keeps them informed of what work homework their child may be missing.  I tell students that we all forget sometimes, but let’s make it a goal not to have any late assignments this year!!

Late Penalties:

Grade 4       15 points off          1 day late

50 points off         2 days late

                   0% recorded         >2 days late

STARS Incentive Program:

Students Taking Academic Responsibility Seriously is a homework incentive program which rewards students for completing their homework on time.  Each quarter students have a goal to reach in order to participate in a STARS activity.  Some of those activities in the past were a game day, movie day, roller-skating, and bowling.  Each child who reaches the set goal may attend each event of the quarter.  One quarter is not dependent on the other, so students start out fresh each quarter.  Fourth graders may have up to eight late assignments first quarter.  Second, Third, and Fourth quarter students may not have more than 5 late assignments to participate.  Students who do not qualify for the program will participate in a workshop to learn how to better organize their work in the future.
