Activity 6 Microsoft FrontPage for Beginners

The editing software I selected is  Microsoft FrontPage. I chose this because beginners (like myself in Edpsy 387) can design web pages without having background knowledge in HTML.

FrontPage Basics

Toolbars

The  standard toolbar in Microsoft FrontPage is almost identical to the other Microsoft toolbars (Word, PowerPoint). This feature makes opening, saving, printing, spell checking, and other functions simple for new users.

Create a new web or new page

To create a new web, users select new web. Once the web has been created, new pages can be added by selecting new page.

Once a new web is opened, you have many choices for what type of web you'd like to create. There are templates available, which are set up for easy editing. The templates are helpful for beginning users in that there are many choices, and the links to other pages are already created.

For example, within the personal web template, interest, photo album, and favorites pages are already linked to the homepage.  All pages can be moved and renamed to fit your needs in designing a web site.

Themes

Another useful tool for first timers is the themes option. Instead of spending time looking for dividers and buttons to insert into your page, FrontPage has a nice selection of designs to choose from.

Users can also select no theme if they choose to have a completely blank page. More themes can be installed from FrontPage in addition to the themes listed here.

Views

I found the views toolbar in  FrontPage to be exceptionally helpful.

When you are working on a web page in FrontPage, most of the time you'll work in the page view.

The page view allows you to insert text, graphics, and make other changes to your web page.

The navigation view is also helpful in creating a web page for the first time. Users can quickly see how one page links to another and can edit these pages as needed. The pages can be dragged to different locations within the web and renamed in the navigation view as well.

New pages can also be inserted and moved around as the user wishes.

Another useful feature of FrontPage is the HTML view. In this view, users can add applets or other advanced options to their pages. In this way, FrontPage allows one to edit and view HTML tags without having tremendous background knowledge in how HTML works.

Formatting Web Pages

   Inserting lines, banners, pictures

To insert a horizontal line like the line below, select horizontal line under the insert menu.

A banner can be inserted the same way

By double clicking in the banner, users can easily change the text.

Pictures can be inserted similarly. Options are given for selecting graphics from clipart or from other files.

Inserting Bookmarks & Hyperlinks

To select text that will move you to another location within the same page, insert bookmark is the easiest way to go. Select the text, insert bookmark and give it a name.

Pressing ok gives the text an underline, noting that it has been bookmarked. To hyperlink to the bookmark, highlight the text and click the hyperlink icon.

Inserting Components

Not only does FrontPage make inserting graphics, banners, hyperlinks, bookmarks, and horizontal bars simple, but other components are available as well. One of my favorites is the hover button, which allows users to hyperlink text to a button.

The hover button feature allows you to insert your own text and choose where to link it to.

The hover button can link within a page or to a URL. The color, text, and size can all be formatted to meet your needs.

Advanced Features

Add Frames & forms

Frames allow you to display information on your web pages that remains on every page as users browse through multiple pages. Frames are usually used for banners, tables of contents, and hyperlinks within your pages.

The easiest way to insert a frame is to open a new page and click on the frames pages tab.

Many templates are available for preview in the lower right corner. After choosing one, press ok.

You can specify which web page you want to appear in each specific frame. If you're adding frames to an existing web page, select set initial page and select the page.

If you're adding a new page to a frame, select new page so that you can add information to the page.

Saving frames works the same as saving other web pages to make future editing easy.

Inserting forms works similarly. After clicking insert form a form with submit and reset buttons appear on your page.

The space inside the form can be reset by hitting enter as many times as needed. Once the form is created, you can add information inside it.

Users can select from a one line text box,  scrolling box,  check box, radio button, drop down menu, or a push button. The set up process within these is self explanatory. Once your selection is made, you need to specify how you want to get access to the results of the form. To do this, press insert, form, properties.

To have the results sent to your web server, type in the server address under file name. If you want your results sent to email, delete the server information and type in your email address.

Choose options from the left corner. In this box, select email results and select the file format.

By selecting ok, a dialogue box appears. Click no to keep the email address you choose.

Cost-Benefit

Microsoft FrontPage 2000 sells for $149.00. By purchasing the software from Amazon.com, you can get it for $127.99. If you choose to mail in the $40 rebate, you're down to paying only $87.99. This program is so user friendly and easy to use, that even the $149 price is a bargain. There is a 2002 upgrade available for $69.00. I highly recommend FrontPage, especially for new web page designers who are familiar with other Microsoft software.
