Project Summary

  • This project has several facets to it and give me the opportunity to expand throughout my curriculum.  Students currently learn basic spreadsheet skills through a series of teacher led examples and worksheets.  The online spread sheet unit has students complete a series of spread sheet simulations using data from previous activities.  Online resources and tutors will attempt to make the lessons self guided and allow students to work at their own pace.  In a classroom filled with the full range of student abilities, this self pacing is important.  Students will be instructed to use a set of FAQs and other online resources to answer questions that may come up.  This technique should help students to become more independent learners, and hopefully develop their skill to "answer their own questions."

  • The online aspect of the assignments allows students to access the lessons from home.  This will give students who are working at a slower pace additional time to complete assignments they were not able to finish during class.  With my current population of students, 95% of them have internet access from home.  For those students who do not have access from home, they are given access during open lab times.  Again, the online aspect will allow those students to work on the assignments without the need for me to be there.

Goals

  • Students will become more independent learners

  • Students will be able to complete assignments at their own pace given the additional access opportunities.

  • Students will be able to become "self learners" when dealing with technology.

  • This unit will be completed by 8th grade students after a review of basic spreadsheet functions.

  • Students will also be given a lesson on how to navigate the project website.

  • Changed the aesthetic layout of the site to make navigation easier

  • Added the "Ask Mr. Kelsey" link to allow students easy access to me.

  • Added more external FAQ's and Tutors

  • Added menu bar to left to improve navigation

  • Added Previous & Next Activity links to bottom of each activity to improve navigation.
