| 7. Communication:
The teacher uses knowledge of effective written, verbal, nonverbal, and visual communication techniques to foster active inquiry, collaboration, and supportive interaction in the classroom. |
Communication is vital to the education process.
Three years of being on the speech team in high school has taught me that
the choice of words and how they are presented can be a powerful tool even
beyond the school setting. Communication
is necessary for jobs and personal relationships.
My first language was Korean and I went through 2 or 3 years of ESL
during elementary school. I have
always had grammatical problems in writing and speech but now in college I know
I have made great strides.
Written communication is vital for teachers.
Teachers communicate outside of the classroom to parents and
administration. Grading papers is a way to communicate to students on how to
improve the process of writing. Discussion,
verbal inquiry, and presentations are also necessary components in English
education. In order to teach my
students how to be effective communicators, I must first create a safe
environment where all ideas are accepted and appreciated.
Communication doesn't always utilize the tongue but writing, interaction
with others, body language, and technology may play a role.
Eye contact and confidence are huge in presentation skills.
Professionalism, tactfulness, and consideration should be part of all
communications. I have included in
this section:
1)
Paper on the justification of my response to a high school student's paper.
This includes the student's original paper, the original assignment, my
response, and my analysis of the response.
In order to be a more effective communicator, I must consider several
factors such as the circumstance and the individual student.
I know I have to take time to get to really know my students in the
future and how that will be hard as a beginning teacher who is just getting to
know the school system, lesson planning, and classroom management.
I must be careful with everything I say and maintain high standards of
speech. I must not be too
professional so that I will not intimidate students from open discussion.
I have to work towards being a better listener and having my students be
the focus of discussion and inquiry rather than my leading it.
