Rationale for Course Grades:                                                                                                          

I wanted to somewhat separate my evaluations for achievement versus effort.  Part of my education philosophy is that everyone can work toward an ‘A.’  Note the portfolio is worth the highest percentage.  That is because portfolios are compilations and evidence of progression.  The portfolios will contain various writings in all stages but most importantly portfolios can be revised for a better grade.  The two tests are significant because they will cover large portions of class material.  The final exam is worth only 10% so students will not have to worry so much about how it will affect their overall grade.  The quiz section will also include short one page responses as well as pop quizzes which will keep students in check.  Homework and participation will assess effort and consistency.  I allotted for a small % of points for speeches and group projects because they are important skills that students must learn and can use in the real world.
