Extended Response

 The students will read a sample reading that is titled The Sit-Ins That Shook Up the Nation and answer one extended response, which is stated below.

How can the Greensboro sit-in be used as a model to support social change? Use information from the article and your own observations and conclusions to support your answer.

Once the students have written the essay, the students will be introduced to the rubric located on the ISBE website: http://www.isbe.net/assessment/readrubric8.htm Then the students will take a look at some examples of answers from the ISBE website: http://www.isbe.net/assessment/PDF/2002ReadingSample.pdf Finally, the students will grade their own essay using the same rubric.
