Response to Tammy -- Note-taking is a very important skill for students to learn. They will use the skill for the rest of their education and probably into their careers as well. Modeling seems to be a very effective way to teach this skills. Students, especialy younger ones, seem to learn well by mimicking others.
Response to Tammy -- I have always loved Tangrams. Until they moved this last weekend, I had two 3rd grade boys (twins) that I saw for math. One day, one of the boys was gone. I decided that with just one student there was really no reason to go on the the next math lesson (I was useing Saxon Math 2 with them). So... spur of the moment, I got out my tangram pieces with accompanying cards. I was amazed to discover that this little boy had never seen tangrams before. We spend our math period playing with them. He learned to "fill in" the outlined patterns quickly. He was immensely proud of himself whenever he completed a pattern. While working, we talked about how turing the shapes made them fit into different spaces, the names of the different pieces, and how they fit together to make different shapes.
