Lesson 5: Learning and Instruction
15 Wonderments
1. I wonder what Victor thought of all the new things he was learning. Did he think that they were strange? What did he think about the people around him? ...
2. I wonder how old Victor was when he was left to grow up in the forest. Just how long did he survive there with no human contact? ...
3. I wonder how different Itard's discoveries would have been changed if Victor had spent less time in the forest, or if he was a younger or older child...
4. I wonder how much Itard's findings would have varied with a girl instead of a boy ...
5. I wonder how frustrated Itard was during the process of helping Victor learn to live, adapt, in society...
6. I wonder why did Education Psychologists start by studying animals, instead of just watching the people and children around them...
7. I wonder why more of Itard's techniques have not be integrated into regular education as they have been in special education...
8. I wonder if learning isn't really a combination of the three metaphors discussed on pages 12-14: "Learning as Response Strengthening", "Learning as Knowledge Acquisition", and "Learning as Knowledge Construction"...
9. I wonder why Mayer did not consider Problem-Solving in his metaphors...
10. I wonder why it took so long for psychologists to discover the connection between psychology and education...
11. I wonder what was so special about Latin that they thought that learning it would improve students' mind (Mayer, pg. 18)...
12. I wonder why theorists are always trying to make a decision between the behaviorist and the cognitive views. Why don't they just try to combine them? ...
13. I wonder why Mayer did not take Piaget's research and theories into consideration during his discussion on memory stores and learning processes. Piaget did a lot of work on how a child learns and stores things in memory. (Santrock, pg. 245-256)
14. I wonder how Mayer's Meaningful Learning fits in with Gardner's Multiple Intelligences...
15. I wonder if Social Knowledge should not be considered in Mayer's Kinds of Knowledge (Mayer, pg. 15). Children learn about their surrounding environment and what is expected of them. They must have a knowledge of that society to grow and succeed within it....
