Lesson 4b: Jones's Positive Discipline Model
15 Wonderments
1. I wonder how long it takes with-it-ness to become second nature…
2. I wonder what should be done if a second student starts disrupting while the teacher is making eye contact with the first student…
3. I wonder if there is a quick way to make up for the instruction that is lost during discipline situations…
4. I wonder whether Jones’s model can successfully be applied to students with behavioral/emotional disabilities—students who are not bothered by, or blatantly ignore, eye contact, proximity, saying their name, and so on…
5. I wonder if “camping-out” is asking for trouble from other students. They see that the teacher is otherwise occupied, and therefore have what they see as a perfect opportunity to cause their own distraction…
6. I wonder if time-out might be considered a reward by those students who are looking for a way out of participating in class...
7. I wonder if rewards and consequences that are given to the entire class (when appropriate) are more beneficial in that they help students realize that their behavior is indeed affecting everyone in the class, not just the offenders and the teacher…
8. I wonder how much struggle would be involved to get a class back on track after a teacher gets off track…
9. I wonder how quickly students adjust to a teacher using this model as opposed to the reward/consequence-weighted methods…
10. I wonder what it would feel like to be a student in a classroom like this…
11. I wonder what possible solutions might be for students who consistently request inappropriate PAT’s (i.e. R-rated movies, free-time, etc.), and when those students refuse to consider appropriate PAT’s…
12. I wonder how much adjustment this model would take to be successful with various age groups…
13. I wonder how this model would work with a student who continues to misbehave once he or she is the Quiet Time/Time Out scenario…
14. I wonder if students would develop the opinion that the students who misbehave are gaining more attention from the teacher than those who are trying to succeed…
15. I wonder if it is feasible to teachers to actually wait for a student to stop inappropriate behavior…
