Curriculum
Currently, I teach three sections of seventh grade literature and three
sections of seventh grade English. One of the three literature sections is
team-taught with a special education/L.D. resource teacher. While the
curriculum in this class is the same as my other literature classes, my
co-teacher assists me in providing extra support for the students with I.E.P.'s
in this class.
Literature
The seventh grade literature curriculum includes the use of a basal textbook
for the short story unit at the beginning of the school year. However, the
majority of the school year is spent studying various novels as a class.
We cover the classics of literature--The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, A
Christmas Carol, Call of the Wild, and Treasure Island.
In addition, I have incorporated a five to eight week unit of Reading Workshop
to encourage student choice and enjoyment of reading while teaching needed
skills and concepts. A more detailed explanation of Reading Workshop is
contained under the Research and Learning
Into Practice headings.
English
The seventh grade English curriculum focuses primarily on writing
instruction--creative, narrative, expository, persuasive, and poetry.
While I believe grammar, spelling, and punctuation skills are essential for
successful writing, I teach most of these skills in the context of my students'
writing. As necessary, I supplement grammar instruction with the grammar
textbook.
