The making of R&J is told by Franco himself in his autobiography published
in 1986 by Arena Book (UK). There's one or two small pics of the movie but
is in any case very interesting. An essay about significances and relations
between original text and Zeffirelli's cuts are in a book named "Shakespearian
Films, Shakespearian Directors" by P.S. Donaldson, Unwin Hyman inc. 1990.
It's very good but maybe a little bored for a teenager; it's illustrated
with very small, b/w pics. The most nice article about R&J is in a book
very good and a little expensive, "The films of the Sixties", by D. Brode,
Cittadel press 1980. Reading this piece you can understand the importance
of this movie for 60's youngsters. It was a cult as Baz's film, only in a
time without web or great intercontinental links, and with less opportunity
to enjoy all together for an event. There are great pictures, alas again
in B/W ( I don't know why, colours are so wonderfull in this film) but surely
fine.
Romeo and Juliet 1968 video.
Look at your local music/video store like Tower
Records, Best Buy, Sam Goody and/or Record Town. Borders and Barnes&Noble
are also good stores to check.
Comment:I bought the widescreen version
of our beloved film, and I must say it's a
treat for the crazed R+J fans. You see so much more in this
format. The pan-and-scan version cuts away the
peripheral (sp?) views, which means that
in some scenes you only see one character at a time. The
widescreen version takes you back to the theater and
gives you a better idea of how Baz Luhrmann
intended his film to be seen. In other words, BUY IT! It's
probably best viewed on a large screen tv, but my 19-inch
did a good job, too. "William Shakespeare's
Romeo + Juliet" is still my favorite film of all
time, two-and-a-half years after its release. (I must admit
that "Shakespeare In Love" did come close,
though.) thanks for listening.

Comment:Added Jan. 1, 1999: I just got the Soundtrack
for the R+J '68 version for Christmas and for everyone that
has been looking it, it's easy to find. Just go to www.cdnow.com,
go to the Search (it's right at the top of the screen ) ,
change the Artist to Soundtrack and type in Romeo and Juliet, the Search
Results will come up and it's the first one on the list. I
think it's only $15.45 too. I hope this helps! Thanks to
Jenny
for this info.
