Character Education Project
    By: Jodi Altenbaumer
The students will learn about Character Education in the classroom and in the computer lab.  First, I will do different lessons on Character Education in the classroom.  I have a book on Character Education that has wonderful ideas.  One lesson that I plan on doing comes from the web site the students will visit in the computer lab.  We are going to discuss how to be a good friend.  I am going to start out with chart paper, and write down the ideas the students share.  I will then have the students work in groups of four to make a picture showing how to be a good friend.  I am going to keep the ideas on the chart paper, and their pictures posted in the classroom.  After we finish the lessons in the classroom, we will go to the computer lab visit a web site, called "Friendship and Feelings".  The web site is located at: http://www.tooter4kids.com/Friendship/Index.htm.  The students will be asked to go to four parts of this web site: Feeling Words, What is a Friend, Nice Things to Remember, and Where to Find a Friend.  After they have viewed the four sections, the students will come back to my web page.  Back at my web page, the students will take a quiz over what they learned.  I thought about having ten questions for the quiz, but I decided on just five questions.  I realized that the students are in first grade, so they may need the extra time to complete five questions.  I will go back and add more questions if I see the students are having no trouble with the quiz.  After the students finish the quiz, I will have them draw showing how they are a good friend.
I also have Winnie the Pooh books that have lessons.  There are 18 books, and each book always ends with the lesson the students are supposed to learn.  It is neat having the students try and figure out what the lesson was.
The goal of introducing Character Education in August is to start the new school year off on the right foot.  Hopefully, what the students learn from this project will carry over into the classroom and throughout their years at Johns Hill.
My first graders will be the audience first then the rest of the first graders will be introduced to Character Education.
